A World
In a Homeland
Yemen --- as a people, a culture, and a homeland --- is an integral part of
the Islamic and Arab worlds. It is a natural extension of the Islamic
civilization, whose humanitarian features have been cooperatively elaborated
by many peoples and nations in accordance with enlightened and enduring
principles. It is also the heir to a deep-rooted indigenous civilization.
The ancient and the Islamic civilization confer on Yemen unique
characteristics that have enabled it to be receptive to dialogue with other
civilizations and to be open-minded about upholding its past with the rich
scientific and creative offerings of the modern age.
With this creative engagement between the particular and the general, Yemen
has been able to revive its rich, but hitherto dormant, heritage--which
drives it also toward further constructive interaction with other cultures.
Accordingly, the Yemen Heritage and Research Center, Being aware of the true
potential of modern communication to bring together disparate people and to
sweep away the barriers that separate them, is working diligently to build a
bridge for dialogue among nations. The goal of the Center is to spread the
benefits of the output of the human mind irrespective of bias or
orientation.
Activities of the Center
Research:
The Center strives to achieve the following:
- To encourage research in the human and social fields
and to organize discussions, lectures, and annual conferences on Yemen's
past, present, and future;
- To publish the proceedings of these activities in
books and pamphlets;
- To seek out and sponsor with the potential and the
skills to prepare, print, and distribute such studies.
Library:
The Center sees to establish the following:
- A Yemen "Heritage Library" that will gather,
photograph, edit, and publish as much material as possible about Yemen's
heritage both within and outside Yemen, using the best methods and
techniques available; and
- A "Contemporary Library" to inventory and gather all
pertinent material that has been written about Yemen in Various languages.
This includes the works of travelers, artists, Orientalists, and
anthropologists as well as all documentary sources and social and
humanistic studies about Yemen and other countries.
Journal:
The Center will publish a quarterly magazine, al-Masar, to cover its
activities and to reflect its interests and its intellectual outlook on
Yemen and well as global issues.
